Model Maker/Toy Inventor

As a Model Maker/Toy Inventor in IDEO's Toy Lab you'll work closely with our Toy Invention team to transform post-it sketches into full working toys utilizing all available means of fabrication/hackery.

Role Summary:

The chosen candidate will have expertise in CAD and demonstrate superior skill in multiple facets of model making. Techniques we use often and would like to see examples of in your portfolio are (in no particular order):

• vacuum forming • hand sculpting • finish work • mechanism development • hand cutting of foam core, styrene, etc. • 3D printing
• Illustrator, photoshop • Laser cam • casting/molding • soldering, electrical assembly • quick/low resolution prototyping

The chosen candidate will take direction well, work well in a team environment, and demonstrate a high level of detail while still working quickly and efficiently in our fast-paced multiple-project environment. The candidate will also be comfortable and skillful working independently to explore and develop design solutions. These range from mechanism development, process/material explorations, flat models/quick mockups, etc.

Our projects span the range from quick 1-hour mockups to multiple-week highly detailed prototypes so the chosen candidate will be comfortable working at multiple speeds and levels of refinement. Last, a passion for kids and toys, hard work (but often fun!), and beautiful end results are all musts.

Skills: • 2+ years experience creating models for product development. • Outstanding conventional hand building and paint finishing skills. • Thorough hands-on fabricating experience using a variety of power and hand tools, computer aided machining, etc. • Strong problem solving and analytical skills. • Proficient with Solidworks • Ability to communicate design ideas through drawings and CAD (solidworks preferred) • Excellent verbal presentation and communication skills • Reliable and self motivated - goes above and beyond the expected • Willing to learn and develop on a personal level • Must be detail oriented and have excellent organizational skills

Education: • Certificate degree required with a concentration in Model Making, Industrial Design, and Mechanical Engineering or related Industrial Manufacturing. • Bachelors preferred.
