About this job

Job description

Role Summary

The Design Research Coordinator provides support to teams by helping define and scope research plans, recruiting research participants directly as well as managing external recruiting agencies, planning and coordinating complex research activities, and by organizing team logistics.

Why is this job important to IDEO?

As a Design Research Coordinator you work across project teams not only in the Chicago office, but also teams around the IDEO global community.  You will have a unique knowledge of the breath and scope of the work across studios and the ability to share that perspective back to project teams.

Once you are here you will:

  • Work on projects from a wide range of industries from medical to consumer product goods to automotive and beyond.

  • Have an opportunity to be part of projects that take the time to understand what it’s like to be a person living with a disorder or within constraints.

  • Get to recruit participants and experts that provide valuable insight to design teams.

  • Get to talk with inspiring people and come away with knowledge and understanding of something that you might not have known about before a project.

Some previous projects to check out:

Bedsider for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy

Bedsider is a great example of the importance of recruiting inspiring participants. The website features videos of women—and a few men—sharing highly personal stories about their birth control choices. It was the Design Research Coordinator's role to find these participants and make them feel comfortable about sharing their stories in a very public setting.

Relevant experience:

  • Passionately curious – We want people who are excited to be in the field and as inquisitive about other people and their stories as they are empathetic.

  • Individuals who are naturally empathetic and passionate about people - We look for those who have a natural skill to engage with people at a deep level. They should be passionate about understanding human behavior.

  • User research skills - Design Researcher Coordinators must be prepared to plan user research to help researcher’s in discovering insights first hand. Candidates should be familiar with ethnographic research, focus groups, and usability testing.

  • Flexibility – Our researcher is in “the field” which can be in domestic or international locations. We are looking for someone open and flexible enough to recruit in any location or for any ask.
